Sometimes it’s easy to forget that Flight Attendants are not just another pretty face, but that we are trained in a variety of first aid procedures.
In an onboard emergency, we usually page for a medical professional. There are times, however, when one is not available, or the situation requires a quicker reaction time. In those cases, we are the primary first aid giver.
These first aid skills are also transferable to our personal lives. Stories are legendary about Flight Attendants who have used their first aid skills to save lives of their family or friends.
Today is the anniversary of the Heimlich Maneuver, first introduced in 1974. It is one of the basic skills learned in any first aid class, and is very easy to learn, and perform. Face it, if it’s a technique we can do it on a plane, you can do it anywhere.
I have two recommendations for you today: Recognize the myriad skills Flight Attendants bring to their job, and learn the Heimlich Maneuver yourself!
