If traveling in the U.K. is in your future, you’ll want to check out Tourist Tracks, founded by Tim Gillett, a former journalist.
From a rather modest start, the business has grown, and it now works with tourist information centers to research, write, and record downloadable audio tours throughout the U.K. There is a revenue sharing arrangement with the tourist centers, so it’s a win-win for everyone.
The tours can be downloaded onto your MP3 players, then you just plug in your headset and off you go to see the sights at your own pace. If you don’t have a MP3 player, you can have CD mailed out to you to play on a personal stereo. A printable map comes with each audio tour, allowing you to move on from location to location when you’re ready, instead of having to keep up with everyone else on a guided tour.
Current tours inlcude:
Cambridge
London ““ City of Westminster
City of London
Brighton
Oxford
Bath
Prices: Approximately $10 for a downloadable tour, and having a CD mailed out is approximately $13. Prices on the website are quoted in pounds sterling. A free sample is available so you can get a sense of the quality and depth of the information.
I really need to plan a trip to London!
