Levain Bakery on Manhattan's Upper West Side
October is National Cookie month, and in my book, that’s a wonderful thing to celebrate.
One of my favorite places for cookies is Levain Bakery on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Stephanie first turned me on to Levain’s cookies. Stephanie is a friend, co-worker, foodie, and I have her to blame for this cookie addiction.
If you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to miss Levain ““ it’s in a basement. But missing it would be a terrible mistake!
The bakery is small, and a neighborhood kind of place. When you walk in, you can see the kitchen and ovens. And that means that you can also smell the wonderful aroma of baked goods. (NOTE: Levain also has a second location in the Hampton’s.)
Levain makes four big, gooey, wonderful cookies:
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies are full of oatmeal and plump raisins.
Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies are a chocolate lover’s dream, made with dark chocolate cocoa and semi-sweet chips.
Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies are mounds of delicious cookie filled with chocolate chips and walnut chunks.
Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip Cookies are the perfect combination of dark chocolate with peanut butter chips.
These are huge, wonderful cookies (6 ounces each), made with top quality ingredients and no preservatives or additives. My favorite is Oatmeal Raisin. They have enough calories to induce guilt for weeks, and are so very, very good.
If you can’t visit Levain’s in person, they do have mail order available. The cost is a little pricey ““ but when you need a cookie fix, you can’t put a price tag on this kind of indulgence.
Oh yeah, Levain’s makes other wonderful baked things, too.
Levain Bakery is located at 167 West 74th Street (Upper West Side), and 354 Montauk Highway (Hampton’s).
