The Shining & The Stanley Hotel

stanley hotel The Shining & The Stanley Hotel

Are you a fan of The Shining?  Do you get goose bumps reading the Steven King novel?  Or maybe you still have nightmares of Jack Nicholson bursting through the door in the movie?

Well, you can celebrate Halloween by spending a night at The Stanley Hotel, the place that inspired the novel.

Located about an hour from Denver, near Rocky Mountain National Park, The Stanley Hotel is known not only for it’s inspirational role in The Shining, but also for its spectacular views and magnificent architecture.  It’s been around since 1909, and continues to be featured as one of America’s most haunted hotels.

Some spooky highlights:

During your visit, you may be lucky enough to meet Flora Stanley, the first owner’s long-deceased wife.  It’s claimed that she can still be seen and heard, late at night, either playing the piano or wandering about the lobby.

The entire fourth floor is claimed to be rife with strange nighttime activities.  Guests staying in room 418 have claimed that they can hear children playing outside the door, yet when they open it, no one is around.

Steven King stayed in room 217.  You may find this frightening, or oddly inspiring.

Throughout the year, the hotel offers regularly scheduled History and Ghost Tours of the hotel.  The tours are approximately an hour and a half, and cover the history of the hotel, its connection to Hollywood, and some of the Ghostly Encounters that have occurred at the hotel.  Cost:  $10/person.

Halloween packages are available, so you can claim you’re going for the beauty of the hauntings.
