I think that we all know how important it is to keep your passport some where that it won’t be stolen or lost. A passport is a valuable piece of identification, and if you are traveling abroad, you are going to need it to get back into the country.
But stuff happens. So it’s important to have a plan in case that happens.
I recommend bringing a hard copy of your passport and any necessary visas. Make a copy, keep it separate from the actual passport, and should the original go missing you will have the documents you need to get it replaced.
In these technologically advanced times, I’d also recommend scanning a copy of your passport and visas and then emailing it to yourself. You can retrieve it from your laptop, phone, or an internet cafe, and use it to have your passport replaced.
And as a third precaution, leave a copy of your documents at home with a trusted family member or friend. If the above copies go missing as well, there will be someone who can fax or email the information directly to you.
