Labor Day originated as a holiday in 1982 in New York City, when the Central Labor Union sought a day off for working citizens. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894.
For many people, Labor Day is celebrated as the last weekend of the summer, and it has become more widely celebrated with barbecues, picnics, or a last party of the deck, than with parades and political speeches.
Whatever your choice for celebration today, I wish all of you a very Happy Labor Day!
