The Short List: From 34,000 to 50

The Best Job in the World has announced it short list of 50 finalists for what, to many, seems like more of a dream vacation that work.

hamiltonislandqueenslandaustralia thumb The Short List:  From 34,000 to 50 In case you’ve missed the buzz about it, the job is to be an Island Caretaker in the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia.  What does an Island Caretaker do?  In this case, it means living and playing on Hamilton Island, traveling to some of the other nearby island, and then blogging about it.

It’s a six month contract, which involved a nice salary, a 3-bedroom home to live in, transportation, and six glorious months in the sun.

Sound too good to be true?

Over 34,000 people through their hat into the ring, by submitting a video application to Tourism Queensland.  The most applications came from the United States (11,565), followed by Canada (2,791), Great Britain (2,261), and Australia (2,061).

The short list of 50 will be narrowed to an even shorter list of 11, 10 selected by Tourism Queensland and one selected by public voting.  These 11 will all be flown to Queensland for an in person interview.

View the top 50 videos, and vote for your favorite, March 2nd – 24th, 2009.  The top 12 will be announced on April 2nd, 2009.
