Tax Filing Tip for Travelers

Are you traveling today?

All of a sudden you notice the calendar says April 15th – oh, oh, it’s Tax Day!  And you’re on the road without access to much of anything.  What should you do?

postaltruck thumb Tax Filing Tip for Travelers While there are plenty of people who will remind you that it’s your own fault that you waited till the last minute, a fellow traveler would never stoop to such a comment.  When you spend time on the road, days and sometimes months just pass you by without your realizing it.

So here’s a practical solution if you’re traveling and need to get your taxes filed.

Download Form 4868, the Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File your return.  You’ll need to attach a check if you think you’ll owe money.  Instructions on where to mail are also listed.

Find a Post Office that is open late, possibly till midnight if you’ll be cutting it close.  The US Postal Service has some handy tips for mailing your IRS return off properly.  And perhaps even more importantly, a list of Post Offices offering extended tax filing hours.  So if you need to mail from on the road, or just find someplace that’s open late after your flight gets in, the USPS has you covered.
