Here’s a questions that I’ve been asked a lot over the last few days while visiting here in Miami.
Q. Do you really like traveling all that much? Why? Don’t you ever get tired of it?
A. Yes. I really do like traveling all that much. And yes, sometimes it can be a hassle, or worse. And no matter how wonderful my travels, I’m always glad to see home once again.
Why do I enjoy it so much? For me, travel is as much about the journey as it is the destination.
When I say “journey” rest assured that I’m not talking about the time spent going through security at the airport or sitting crammed into a middle seat of a plane.
I’m talking about the people and experiences that you have along the way to your destination. Perhaps it’s the interesting seatmate on the plane or the train. Or the student who is waiting at the same bus stop as you. Or maybe it’s getting lost, and finding a neighborhood where residents give you a cool drink and get you going in the right direction.
Of course, it’s also about the destination — seeing some place new, or some place you’ve seen many times, but this time through a new set of eyes.
Travel is about growing and learning through each adventure. It’s coming home again, and realizing that world is both a really big and really small place. It’s learning that people clear across this earth aren’t all that much different than you. It’s realizing that life is an incredible journey, and we should take every opportunity to experience and appreciate that journey.
That’s why I love to travel. To see, to experience, to learn, to taste – and to savor the journey of life.
