Sunday Stories for June 21st, 2015

My time in Hawaii was cut short this past week beause of mechanicals, flight delays, and crew rest issues. Although I missed out on dinner at Town (maybe this coming week), it was good to see friends, and it’s never a bad thing to get more time at home when the Seattle weather is cooperating. I’ve been avoiding the traffic and crowds of the U.S. Open, and enjoying some quiet time.

I’ve been working on a couple stories that you can expect to see soon:  a review of Vice Versa in Las Vegas, a story about a chocolate museum in Cologne, and a review of my Viking River cruise from earlier this spring. And yes, for those of you who are TBEX attendees, I’ve been working like crazy on speaker announcements.

Let’s look at what I’ve been reading this week:

Can Bubbly Boost Brain Power?

Whew! Of course, my reaction to this article may have been related to the fact that I had a glass of bubbly in my hand at the time.

A new study has found that one to two glasses of Champagne a week can help ward off age-related memory loss as well as the onset of dementia and other degenerative brain disorders.

Celebrating Saxon wine tradition at Schloss Wackerbarth

In keeping with the wine theme, a look at wine in Saxony.

Winemaking continues to be an important cultural tradition in eastern Germany with history going back over eight centuries in nearby Meissen.

Move Over Macarons, There’s a New Sweet Treat in Town

Repallce the macaron? Say it’s not so! Although these Quermons d’Ardoise do sound delicious.

Quernons d’Ardoise hail from the Anjou region in the Loire. They take their colour from the slate that decorates the castle and their insides from something altogether tastier.

This Grandma Proves Being Cool Never Gets Old

Think you’re too old to do whatever it is you’ve been secretly dying to do? Take a lesson from Evelyn – you’re never too old.

Several days later I detoured through Yorkville, an upscale Toronto locale. I often take this route and know the area by heart. Yet, this time amidst the trendy shops where matrons happily put down a thousand dollars for a handbag was a new addition to the hood – “The Village Ink- a Tattoo and Piercing Parlour.”

You’ll Never Have To Buy A Non-stick Spray Again Thanks To This Grilling Tip!

What a handy trick. I’ll be giving it a try this afternoon.

Picture this: it’s a beautiful summer evening, you’ve got the grill fired up and are ready to dazzle your guests with some delicious barbecue, when the unthinkable happens…the meal you marinated and grilled to perfection sticks to your barbecue!

Hi, Mary Jo. Thank you for highlighting my post about white- and sparkling-wine production in the German state of Saxony.
